A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is the true story of Ishmael Beah’s, the author and narrator, experience leading into and eventually becoming a child soldier in Sierra Leone’s military during the Sierra Leonean Civil War. The story begins with Beah, then a twelve year old child, leaving his home village of Mattru Jong to attend a talent show where he and other boys, including his brother Junior, would hip-hop dance to their favorite music genre, rap. On his way he encounters his grandmother’s village where she convinces the boys to stay the night, in the morning he is stunned to learn that Mattru Jong was attacked by the Royal United Front (RUF) and that the people who were in the village were now dead or refugees. The impact of war can have very harmful effects on people, especially children. In “A Long Way Gone” by Ishmael Beah, he explains the war of Sierra Leone from his point of view. The tragedy of losing his family, becoming a boy soldier, and the effects of war is said throughout the book, making it an interesting story to read. But, while Ishmael explains what he went through, it is hidden that other people were affected by the actions he took. Although Ishmael did play a victimizer, he was also a victim at the same time.
Ishmael Beah is only twelve yearsold when his village in Mattru Jong is attacked in January of 1993. He happened to be on his way to another village to perform a show with his brother, Junior and a few of his other friends at the time. That’s when his entire life is turned around. He has to travel from place to place, running from rebels (Revolutionary United Front), struggling to survive, losing his brother in the process. Eventually, he is alone and meets another group of boys that he recognized from his secondary school back in Mattru Jong.
Memories “Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose”(Arnold). In the book a long way gone a boy named Ishmael beah tells his story. In this novel Ishmael’s village is eventually raided and he becomes on his own. Through being on his own he thinks of the past and memories of a better life. These memories that he thinks of can hinder him and help him along the way through his journey.

Reality is dangerous and won’t lead to anything good, shown through Ishmael as he was bound to accept that Hatsue never thought he meant anything more than a friend to her. Hatsue’s rejection, “I don’t love you,” ignited a change within Ishmael, transforming into a pessimist, and finding no worth to life.
As human have been advancing in sophistication Grendel has grown to hate the human for what he see them as, barbarians who only know how to destroy, such as the nature around them, which is observed by Grendel as he continues to watch the growth of humanity when he says, “They hacked down trees...and blistered the land….They ..., killed birds for sport, set accidental fires that would burn for days.... There was nothing to stop the advance of man” (40). This quote expresses the human condition for destruction for no cause, which is a cause for Grendel to grow in disdain of the them, so much so that he begins to act against the humans, slaughtering some in their mead halls and others on separate occurrence; however, while his actions seemed to damp the spirit of the lowly humans, Grendel ended with more disdain for the humans because of their unwavering belief in their religion. After Ishmael decided to become a “simple sailor,” he then felt the need to explain his reasoning; however, if Ishmael was truly a simple sailor he would not feel the need to explain his work because it would simply be what he had to do. As chapter one progresses readers begin to further realize how gifted Ishmael truly is. Ishmael makes several references in chapter one as to how people of ancient civilizations respected the sea; Ishmael also refers to the Bible in chapter one. Ishmael is so passionate about the sea that he demands to know, “Why did the old Persians hold the sea holy?” and, “Why did the Greeks give it a separate deity” (Melville).

In the book reveiw for Ishmael Beah’s memoir, “Babes in Arms” the author, William Boyd, outlines the difficulties Ishmael Beah had to go through as a child soldier. As a result of the war in Sierra Leone, the wartime experience Beah had to withstand as a child impacted his life. First of all, there were many obstacles Beah had to face as a child soldier, but one in specific was the separation of his family. In John Milton’s novel, Paradise Lost, Milton tries to juggle with the complicated idea of where he believes humanity belongs in nature, and this is juxtaposed by their assumed success or failure of the matter. His points seem to be clear on where he thinks humans stand throughout this piece. However they become contrasting when the readers begin to look at the deeper meaning of why the first humans are unsuccessful. Milton’s writing implies two sides, the first being that he thought humans were put on the earth to control nature, but that idea is contrasted and complicated by the other side in that they would never be able to accomplish it well enough to satisfy because nature is too vast to actually control.
