Dave Barry In society today, people are becoming more and more easily offended. A simple joke is often times blown way out of proportion instead of being laughed off and taken as just that. Dave Barry, a comedic essayist, understands that idea, which is why he uses self-deprecating humor to distract the readers from the fact that he is making fun of them. Along with the use of sarcasm and hyperboles, this form of humor is, at times, relatable and allows him to get certain points across without offending his readers.

Many people fall in love, but only a few of these people are truly in love with their partners. Cyrano de Bergerac, a play written by Edmond Rostand, tells the story of Cyrano, an intelligent man with a large nose, who loves a beautiful girl named Roxanne. Feeling unconfident about his nose prevents Cyrano from expressing his love. Besides, Roxane has fallen with Christian, a handsome man who cannot verbalize his feelings. Cyrano helps Christian woo Roxanne by writing romantic letters in his name.
It is important to note that this whole “game” was created by Cyrano as he will be the one to find himself in the midst of hypocrisy later on. In his profession of love to Roxane, while pretending to Christian, Cyrano states that “It is hateful to turn honest loving into a game”, but at the same time he is nose deep in the most horrible type of game: toying with Roxane’s love and emotions(77). The author put this line in the conversation in order to provide a detail that adds a flaw to the almost completely flawless personality of Cyrano.

A Humorous Sad Story “"Humor is the only truthful way to tell a sad story" (53). From incorrect English grammar, unusual hilarious nicknames, and getting a laugh out of tragedy, the novel Everything Is Illuminated uses humor to help keep a balance between emotions and gives a realistic life-like feeling to tragedies. One of the most valuable aspects of personality is humor – we value one’s sense of humor and make friends often based on finding certain things funny. But how and why do we consider things to be funny at all? Human beings have strived to uncover fundamental truths about human nature for centuries – even millennia – but humor itself is still yet to be pinpointed. Henri Bergson is only one of many who has attempted this feat, and his essay Laughter: an essay on the meaning of the comic from 1911 breaks down comedy into what he believes to be its essential forms and origins. While Bergson makes many valid points, Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times that was brought to screens only twenty years later seems to contradict many of Bergson’s theories, while Bergson seems to contradict even himself over the course of his essay.
The Importance of A Good Appearance Oscar Wilde’s “Trivial Comedy for Serious People” illustrates the issues rampant in the elite Victorian upper class. He writes, “really, if the lower orders don't set us a good example, what on earth is the use of them? They seem, as a class, to have absolutely no sense of moral responsibility” (17). Wilde’s characters make up a group of upper class Victorians, and Wilde uses their conversations to critique high society. Wilde dissects the Victorian lifestyle with ironic epigrams to illustrate the backwards thinking of most Victorians.
