The story takes place In the summer at the A & P Supermarket, In or near Boston. The 1990’s as Sammy describes Is the time that Stokesie thinks he will become manager on some sunny day and A & P will have different name like “the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki Tea Company”. It was his way of saying Stokesie has a long way to go before becoming manager. Hypocrisy in the story came in many in different forms, first Lengel being a Sunday Church school teacher who is suppose to encourage and help others to be positive and do great things, instead was judgemental and miserable. He was Stern and had a miserable attitude towards life but at the same time seemed to want to follow moral, meaning he thought things should be done properly out of respect. He also was the one who caused friction between he and Sammy, that drove his to make an irrational decision. The reason stereotyping is used in the story because it shows that what the young ladies did by walking in the A & P with their swimsuits in a beach town isn’t a crime when people walk and drive around that way all the time. “the women generally put on a shirt or shorts or something before they get out of the car into the street”. Those women are the ones that have a bad physical appearance really. No one really cares if they cover up or not considering it is a beach town. What it reveals about Sammy is that it doesn't bother him at all he feels why should it bother anyone else if the town where this is taking place Sammy decided to quit his job because of Langel, for shaming the girls, because they walked in the A & P with their bathing suits on. In some way Sammy may have wanted to prove to the girls that he isn't afraid of Langel also that he had stood up for them.
