Slaves were treated like objects and punished on their impulses which makes it inhuman. Frederick Douglass was the son of a slave woman and her white master. He is an escaped slave which makes him experienced in how slaves were treated. Frederick was tired of people treating each other poorly and decided to stand up for himself. Throughout his speech, “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery”, Frederick Douglass talks about the cruel punishment, unfairness and injustice slaves were put through. In the novel Copper Sun by Sharon Draper, she also talks about slavery in America, the horrors and struggles that enslaved black people faced. Humans are created equal, and should be treated the same. For example, Frederick Douglass acknowledged how slaves were being treated and compared to animals. He was hurt and surprised that society and the government let humans be treated this way: “It is admitted in the fact that Southern laws forbid the teaching of the slaves to read and write. Point to any similar laws about the beasts of the field. Then I may agree to argue the manhood of the slave. When the frogs in your streets, the birds of the air, the cattle on your hills, the fish of the sea, and the reptiles that crawl, cannot tell a slave from an animal then I argue with you that the slave is a man!”(3). It is needed for humans to be educated for a better future. All humans should be able to read and write to be able to communicate with one another. If one’s education was taken from them, they would not be able to have a future and would not be able to help what is happening in the world around them. Amari had to risk her own life and learn to read, write and speak English. Amari was only treated equally because she used her knowledge to escape from her plantation and make it to Fort Mose. Fort Mose represented freedom, but not a lot of people lived there. Slaves had to go through a lot and even risk their own lives daily just to get a glimpse of what freedom and equality feels
