Being chained,whipped,feeling abandoned and separated from families is what African American slaves had to experienced for many generations . African American slaves suffered from mental and physical abuse.Frederick Douglass an abolitionist born into slavery around 1818 in Maryland,he was separated from his mother at a young age .Douglass was taught by his slave holder how to read and write around the age of 12. He later became well known by his writings and autobiographies of being a slave(biography editors).One of his most famous stories is Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. On July 5,1852 Frederick Douglass gives a speech, What to the slave is the Fourth of July ,Frederick Douglass uses rhetorical devices,imagery,repetition ,and rhetorical questions to stress the wrongness of slavery to a northern,white audience. First, Douglass uses imagery which is words or phrases that allows the audience to form mental pictures while listening to the speech(google).
