In the midst of all of this he finds a balance by focusing on what really matters. At the same time this keeps him focused on his main goal which is education. Education will be his family's way out of poverty. Through seeing his younger brother that is unemployed and will be having a child soon he looks beyond this and is genuinely proud of where he comes from. He realizes how strong his family is when he seems them fighting through poverty and making things.
The short story “Missionary Money”, written by Chester Himes presents the readers with multiple lessons. Himes uses the themes of theft, greed, discipline, and truthfulness to illustrate the importance of not stealing from your parents. Many children are not raised with proper etiquette, which leaves them with the mentality that it is okay to continue these actions because no one has told them otherwise. Receiving no penalties for bad actions as a kid will only lead to more and more irresponsible choices. The author successfully conveys his message to the readers by providing an example of a young boy who consistently stole from his mother, which eventually backfires on him leaving the readers with a valuable lesson.
Due to the therapy, their little boy, Denny, is born healthy. As time goes on they are presented with opportunities to make him smarter, thinner, and more athletic. In turn, Gary questions if they have made the right moral decision concerning their son. Furthermore, what happens to the relationship between a father and his son when the son becomes a perfect stranger? Perfect Stranger illustrates how a parent’s decision to change pieces of their son’s genetic makeup cannot only change what makes him who he is but, can also have a negative impact on the people around him.

From beginning to end, the son calls his father “Baba” to show his affection and admiration. Despite the father’s inability to come up with a new story, the son still looks up to him. This affectionate term also contrasts with the father’s vision of the “boy packing his shirts [and] looking for his keys,” which accentuates the undying love between the father and son (15 & 16) . The father’s emotional “screams” also emphasize his fear of disappointing the son he loves so much (17). Despite the father’s agonizing visions, the son remains patient and continues to ask for a story, and their relationship remains “emotional” and “earthly”--nothing has changed (20-21).
At the end of the story, the kids learned that their family had been hurt for a long time and that they were grieving the death of their son who died years ago. The kids discovered that their grandparents cared about their dad and them even though they didn’t show
The father’s wife had recently died, leaving him with the boy to take care of with the only mindset of keeping him alive, doing anything for their survival. This affected the father in a big way, leaving him with little hope and hardly any reason to stay alive, but the boy was “his warrant” (McCarthy 5) , his only reason for life. The boy starts out very scared and weak, always wanting to hide behind his father, knowing that one day he will die. The boy matures with every event that happens, and he maintains to have hope throughout most of them. “The man fell back instantly and lay with blood bubbling from the hole in his forehead.
The son himself follows more of his mother’s personality, because he always thinks ahead. This is evident by the quote “…bothered teachers for homework assignments far ahead of their due dates so I could draw up schedules.” This shows that the son thinks ahead and likes to plan for the future, a characteristic he shares with his mother. The fathers care free, go with the flow personality is exemplified by his multitude of last runs.
Character Analysis: The character that I have chosen to analyze is Brother. At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to brother as a fun-loving kid who just wants a playmate. When his brother, Doodle, is born though he becomes selfish and ashamed of his brother. Brother is selfish when he says, “was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him.”

He is at a dead end job working on roofs, he sees himself going nowhere because he is a high school dropout and is looking towards drugs and alcohol for an escape. But everything seems to change when he gets the news that he is going to be a father soon. Becoming a father gave him the mindset that he was going to have to be more responsible now. As his son got older he decided to change his life for him and his son so he began to read books to him. He practiced over and over and three years later he decided that he wanted to go back to get his GED.
The mother shares a melancholy expression as she tries so comfort the boy. “But you must to learn to lose, child”, she says firmly. This sentence in the novel, Sounder, shows that people who are in inferior circumstances often lose hope, and accept defeat. If you have been poor and hungry most of your life, then you will probably learn to accept the state of poor living you are in. The boy is still very young, and has retained some of his faith and spirit.
His idiosyncrasy remains loving and understanding, even when his younger son returned home after many of been away with not a penny to his name. The young son showed disobedience to all the goodness his father had offered to him. The young son showed traits such as selfishness as well as being ungrateful. He had no worth for his father’s property nor did he want to work alongside his father on the family farm.
