It also requires further preparation and planning and safety checks than traditional radiation therapy. How is IMRT used to Treat Mesothelioma? In mesothelioma, radiation therapy can be used after surgery to try and eradicate any small tumors that couldn’t be viewed and resected during surgery. This is called adjuvant radiation therapy. Radiation therapy and IMRT can also be used on a palliative basis to ease the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. These include shortness of breath, pain, bleeding and trouble swallowing. IMRT often requires multiple treatment sessions. When determining the total number of IMRT sessions, several factors come into focus. These include the type, location and size of the tumor, the patient’s health and potential doses to nearby critical areas. On average, patients attend IMRT sessions five days a week for five to eight
