Manipulation Manipulation is a skillful tactic that is not something new to the world. This tactic is used everywhere like on the news and advertisements. When this skill is used by the wrong people, disaster can occur. In Othello, Shakespeare shows how driven one person can be to manipulate someone for revenge. When Othello doesn’t choose Iago as lieutenant, he begins his plan for revenge by manipulating Othello. Iago starts to exploit Othello in a sneaky way. He then carefully manipulates him in small measures before it’s too late, for mistakes can’t be taken back. When Cassio enters the room, he talks to Iago about being in bed with Bianca. In the meantime, Othello is hiding aside to eavesdrop on the conversation thinking Cassio is talking about Desdemona, “Alas, poor rogue, I think indeed she loves me” (iv.i.102). That moment in time was aligned so perfectly for Iago because that was all he needed for Othello to make a rash decisions. Without hesitation, Othello requested for Desdemona to be killed that same night, “Ay, let her rot and perish and be damned tonight / Get me some poison tonight” (iv.i.147-156). This everything Iago wants. He wants Othello to suffer and to be left with nothing. As the night progresses, Othello commits his evil action to Desdemona, “It’s too late. (he smothers her)” (5.ii.95). Iago’s manipulative acts had lead Othello to commit a murder to his beloved wife. Once Emilia enters the room she becomes shocked of all the murders, but soon unravels the truth about Iago’s malicious plan, “I will not charm my tongue / And your reports have set the murder on” (5.ii.196-197). By the end of this scene it is proven that by becoming jealous of what you don’t have and acting on it will take a turn for the worse.
