State of Venice vs. Iago William Shakespeare once wrote, “O, beware, my lord of jealousy! It is the green- eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” (Act 3, Scene 3, Line 195-197). In the play, “Othello”, written by William Shakespeare, Iago was the person that brought jealousy upon Othello and brought the tragedy upon everyone who was involved. I can say Iago is responsible to a certain degree for Desdemona’s death. Iago was so jealous of Cassio who got promoted instead of him, he planned a revenge on Cassio and the general Othello who appointed Cassio. Other than the jealousy and madness there was a rumor about Iago’s wife, Emilia, slept with Othello, after that he just want revenge on Othello without confirming rumor. In ACT 3 Scene 3, Iago mention ‘“Look at your wife; observe her well with Cassio…”’ (Line 228). The connection was if it was not for Iago, who planned those thoughts into Othello’s mind, he would not go as far as killing his lovely wife. Othello doesn’t need to clear out the misunderstanding, he trust Iago so much he assume that everything he said was true. Earlier in the play, Iago says this to Roderigo, “ Let us be conjunctive in our revenge against him” (Act 1, Scene 3, Line 410). Many says all Iago wanted was to get his revenge. Legally, he did not say anything about wanting Desdemona dead. No one heard he is going to hurt her or anything. People does not understand when he says revenge, he is going to attack Othello’s weak point and his weak point was his wife, Desdemona. In Act 1 Scene 1, Iago says “ Plague him with flies. Though that his joy be joy, yet throw such chance of vexation on ‘t” (Line 78-79). They are going to get revenge on him but not directly attack him, so it have to do with Desdemona since he just got marry so the person most important to him is his wife.
