The Moors Murderers What is the background of Ian Brady? Ian brady was the killer of 5 children and he had a very peculiar childhood. He was born on the 2nd of January 1938 to Margaret Stewart. She was a tea room waitress which did not pay well. His dad had passed away 3 months before he was born. His father had worked for a Glasgow newspaper as a journalist. As his mum had little to none guidance when Ian was younger, she had to give him into the care of a couple nearby. His mum came by when he was younger to see him. He lived in a Pollok housing estate. He was accused of torturing animals when he was young which he denied. Ian Brady attended Shawlands Academy in Glasgow. She was born in Crumpsall but was raised in Gorton. She then lived in a standard area in Manchester. Her mother and father regularly abused her when she was young and her father promoted violence in and out of their home. She lived in very deprived environment in which she had to share a room with her mum and dad. At 5 years of age, she went to live with her grandparents. Her dad was considered to be tough. He taught his daughter to fight and when Myra was young, a boy approached her and hurt her face with his nails. Myra’s dad had taught her she should hit this boy back, even though there could have been other solutions to this. Her friend Michael Higgins asked Myra to go swimming one day, Myra declined the offer, and decided that she’d do something else that day. She found out not long after that her friend had died while he was out swimming and she had felt as if she was to blame. She was a clerk at a local engineering company. Myra enjoyed this job. Myra began dating a boy, named Ronnie Sinclair, who she then agreed to marry. Their relationship did not last very long, as Myra decided that he was not the one for her or able to give her what she wanted. Myra fell in love with Ian, putting to the side that he had charges against him. She soon became obsessed with Ian. Although she had went out with other boys, she always went back to Ian. They went on a first date to the cinema which Ian had invited Myra to. They went out on dates quite frequently. Myra yet again went through phases of changing the way she looked. She wanted to look a certain way and would do things to her hair and wear her make up in a way which resembled her idea of perfection. Ian made Myra worry about him and the way he acted due to situations in which he had given her drugs and she was under the influence. Although Ian acted this way and did this, she couldn’t help but still be head over heels for him and still had a desire for Ian. In Myra’s words, “Within months he had convinced me that there was no God at all: he could have told me that the Earth was flat, the moon was made of green cheese and the sun rose in the West. I would have believed him, such was his power of persuasion”. The couple were frequently reading books that contained crimes and suffering or pain. They enjoyed taking photos.
