Many citizens in democratic Latin American countries live under oppression and poverty. Like many other countries in the world, these countries have had revolutions, economic depressions and bad governments. Yet in countries like in Mexico things have not change. Its citizens are aware of the current economic depression, the government’s corruption and violence. Since Mexico mostly all Latin American countries are free or partly free, with the exception of Cuba, people elect their government officials. Yet they are aware of the incompetence of their own government and eventually instead of changing the government, citizens keep voting for the same type of government. a speech by political scientist Gloria Alvarez given at the first Ibero-American …show more content…

This ten minute speech is given at the first annual Ibero-American Youth Parliament which explains why the speaker would want to target young people. Gloria Alvarez gives this speech in front of other political scientist, activists and other professionals, so she makes sure to use a formal language in order to bring credibility and understanding to her speech by using words such as “demagogy”, “dismantle”, “Maslow Pyramid” and “Republic”. The purpose of this speech is to persuade people from keep voting for populist governments. She began by explaining the meaning of populism, and that its main goal is to make people believe that they need from someone else to have a better way of life. She gave the example of Cuba, a country which is not free but many other Latin American countries praise (Venezuela and Guatemala) because its government provides free public services. So this people fail to see that people in this countries are taken from their basic human rights like freedom of speech, access to quality education and health services, and more.
