THe Pleistocene Epoch
The Ice Age was also known as the Pleistocene Epoch. The Pleistocene Epoch began 2.6 million years ago and ended about 11,700 years ago. This period in time was divided into four parts. The Pleistocene was split into four different stages. The first one is the Gelastian (2.6 million to 1.8 million years ago), the second it the Calabrian (1,800,000 to 781,000 years ago), the third is the Ionian Period(781,000 to 126,000 years ago), and finally the Tarantian period (126,000 to 11,700 years ago).

Gelasian Period

It started 1,800,000 years ago and ended 781,000 years ago. The name comes from a place in Italy that has the same name.

Ionian Period Ionian Stage (781,000 to 126,000 years ago) was also called Middle Pleistocene. It was third of four stages of the Pleistocene Series. There is no confirmed global point; however, three locations are currently listed as a possibility. Two of the three possible considerations lay close to the Ionian Sea which also explains the name of the given period. They are both located near Italy. Another location is located in Chiba, Japan. The Ionian Stage came after the Calabrian stage and before the Tarantian stage.

Tarantian Stage The Tartanian Stage (126,000 to 11,700 years ago) which is also called the Upper Pleistocene is the last of the four stages in the Pleistocene era. No global point defining this unit has been established. A point located in a terminal borehole in the city of Amsterdam was accepted, however, it has not been confirmed yet. This stage comes before the Ionian stage and is the last stage of the Pleistocene Epoch.
