Culture is the traditions, beliefs, values, and customs that makes a group of people different from other groups of individuals. The beliefs, values and social expectations of the dominant culture determine whether or not the food brought from other people, locations, and cultures will be accepted in the new area. Culture can also determine if specific groups of individuals are highly dependent upon processed foods, or if the primary source of nutrition for a group is natural foods, culture can influence the health of the people who belong to each culture.

Many people are in the process of identifying ways to alter their cultures as a way to make them healthier, but have the industrialized cultures who rely on processed foods become too dependent upon the processed food industry? The food industry has become a significant part of life for those who depend on it and have allowed for people to have a fast and convenient way to obtain and prepare food and meals, easing the burden that has been traditionally placed on women in the homes. As women have gone to work, they have lost the time that they used to have at home, making home-growing natural foods and home-making every meal is no longer feasible. If children and men are given more responsibilities, households could work together to improve their health and relationships. These revolutions have improved the technology that was available, and this technology has continued to evolve until it eventually became as advanced as it is today. The advancement of the food industry has impacted the cultures who rely on processed foods for survival. Improved technology has made it possible for farmers to grow foods in geographical locations that it may not have been able to be cultivated in the past. Fertilizers have increased the size and amount of food that can be grown. In The Meaning of Food, a documentary produced by PBS, the host of the show, Kwon, travels America to discover the process of how food is mass generated by few people to feed those who rely on it. He started by showing a pizza delivery boy and then discovered that the tomatoes for the sauce come from California. He was told how the industrial revolution has allowed for water to be collected in a reservoir and then brought to the tomato plants. Kwon is then shown new machinery that has since been built and becomes more efficient (PBS). These new inventions from the industrial revolution have allowed for some cultures to easily rely on the food industry because it has been able to effectively grow enough food to provide for the people who want to depend on it because of the convenience that it offers.
