The idea of identity is prominent throughout the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Their identities in family affiliation, age, and social class play large roles in the lives of the star-crossed lovers, and their story as a whole. Family affiliation is the most important identifying factor in the lives of Romeo and Juliet. The prologue states, “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny/Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.” The feud between the Montagues and the Capulets led to both families finding the blood of many on their hands (Tybalt, Mercutio, Romeo, Juliet). Because of the feud’s significance in the prologue, and its’ continued importance throughout the story, we know that there would be no great tragedy without it. As a result
