Both families, especially the Capulet’s, were very unsupportive of their children. Lord Capulet was going to go as far as disowning his own daughter because she did not want to marry Paris, a man twice her age.(DBQ Doc. D “Disobedient Wretch”) Also, the prologue states that both families have “fatal loins,” meaning that the feud between the two families will lead to their children’s deaths. Romeo and Juliet could not even tell their parents about their wedding or their love because they were afraid that they would disapprove and punish them, even though they were their own parents.
Sometimes, parents make the wrong decisions for their children, but sometimes they over do it and cause some problems. Lord Capulet pressured Juliet into marrying Paris until the point where she drank a sleeping potion to escape it and then eventually killed herself. This is one of the reasons why Lord Capulet is the most to blame for the actions in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Lord Capulet was part of the reason why the feud continued. He really did nothing to stop it.
The family controversy between the Capulets and Montagues caused the death of Juliet, Tybalt, and Lady Montague. However, Shakespeare never indicated why the families never got along. Furthermore, Tybalt died, simply because he wanted to duel Romeo, and Romeo won. On the other hand, Juliet committed suicide after seeing Romeo had drunk poison. Also, after Romeo had passed, his mother, Lady Montague, had died from grief.
Teenagers claim to be independent individuals, yet they still value their parents and constantly look to them for support. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a classic play regarding two teenagers from feuding families who ultimately fall in love despite their parents' wishes. The tragic demise of the two lovers is a direct result of the Capulet’s disregard for Juliet’s emotional well being. The Capulet and Montague’s feud prompts Juliet to assume her own parents would disapprove of her relationship with Romeo. Thus, she is forced to keep their marriage private, causing her to perform elaborate schemes and eventually resort to committing suicide.
Often teenagers struggle with this kind of parenting leading to rebellious acts and leaving them with a fear of lack of control. Juliet is a brave, ambitious character who takes control of the environment around her. Both families resented one another and their actions vastly affected others. When Capulet meets up with Paris, he talks about having something similar to an arranged marriage with his daughter but then Capulet says “And she agreed, within her scope of choice, Lies my consent and fair according voice” (Shakespeare 13). Which is ironic because he talks about asking for her consent but later manipulates her and threatens to kick her out of their home if she doesn’t marry Paris.
In dramatic literature, the characters are often responsible for the outcome. In Romeo and Juliet, guilt is drawn from every part of the play and affects the entire outcome of the play. Several characters are responsible for Romeo and Juliet's death. Those characters are the Capulets, Friar Lawrence, and Tybalt are all to blame for their deaths.
Adults have great influence over the young impressionable minds of children, especially as parents or parental figures. It is their responsibility to help lead and guide them down a safe, successful path. However, many misuse this power, intentionally or not, causing more harm than good. In the fifteen century, during Romeo and Juliet’s time, marriage at a young age was extremely common, whereas in modern times many people get married close to thirty. Age is not the only wedding custom that differs today. Unlike the fifteenth century, in today’s society people are able to marry anyone they choose, people marry for much different reasons, and what is expected from the couple’s families have changed. Romeo and Juliet shows that marriage in the fifteenth century is between a man and women, and must be approved by the two families coming together in matrimony.
