Humans are curious creatures. Ever since humanity started, we always looked for new things to explore in order to develop new theories and advance in life. Some governments in our modern world encourage knowledge others, promote ignorance so they can control society and impose their laws without anyone protesting or questioning them. The universe created by Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 illustrates the theme of combat against an ignorant society, where knowledge is discarded and where everything is controlled by the government. The author was able to illustrate this theme by using the main character’s description and evolution, the setting and finally symbolism.

The novel introduces the main character called Guy Montag. He used to work as a fireman, although firemen in this society start fires instead of putting them out. Their job is based on burning books to increase ignorance in the society. A character called Clarisse met Montag and showed him a different way of life that consisted on appreciating nature and life. Without any notice, Clarisse died from being hit by a speeding car which made Montag question the reality of his life, therefore he started criticizing the system and he started to embrace knowledge. He began by stealing books to read them in order to get sophisticated. He started to appreciate reading and the new informations he’s receiving from reading different books. During the novel, Montag was opposed by many people when they knew that he was reading the books instead of burning them. Even his wife opposed him and didn’t want anything to do with the books. The society described in the novel doesn’t enjoy nature, read books or even have meaningful interactions between each other. They prefer driving fast, watching TV or listening to the radio. At the same time, we see how depressed these individuals are and how meaningless their lives are, although they accept it because of their ignorance. At the same time, we see intellectual people such as Guy Montag, Faber and Clarisse who couldn’t succumb to ignorance. The government presented had absolute control and they set laws to make everyone equal, therefore the society won't know the difference between social classes. Also censorship plays a big role in this society as described by the captain: "Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against." Therefore, the group called as the Book-People defended knowledge, because if people didn’t know their rights, how can they claim them. We can see the conflict in the novel by describing the setting of an universe where the society is over controlled but at the same time, other groups are taking actions in order to raise
