In the 1994 American romantic comedy film, Forest Gump, one phrase coagulates in my mind after reading Feed: “Stupid is as stupid does”, exclaimed Forest, as a way of describing you can’t expect anything except ignorance and stupidity from a person who is stupid. No more is this more prevalent than in the epic novel, Feed by M.T Anderson, where people have a super computer placed directly in their brains to help them become the ultimate in thinking, problem solving, and intelligence. However, it becomes quickly obvious that this, so-called Feed is abused; people are so reliant on technology that thinking becomes obsolete and ignorance and stupidity become the norm. Set in the future, the post-apocalyptic world is desolate, and completely destroyed. Even to sit on the beach, you need a protective suit; the sea is even described as being completely dead. The earth’s marine life is placed in protective coverings to keep them from being intoxicated, or like some other animals, even moving into human territory for the destruction of their habitat. The people themselves are rotting from the inside out. With nature’s balance being thrown off, people are not exempt from this peril, for their skin is peeling off, their hair is falling out, and they have these huge gaping wounds, appearing all over their entire body. By using the Feed people have become, emotionally detached from the earth and communicating with others, in favor of material possessions, and as a result people are continuously distracted by the Feed, keeping them from their true reality and fostering generations of ignorance. Again, Violet shows us readers that she’s not a shallow person attracted to people for their monetary status and how they look, but simply by the internal mechanics of people that make them have great charisma and personality. Violet makes her position known, even though her clothes are outdated, and the people she chooses to like are not the most attractive, Violet keeps her value system void of placing monetary status on herself, and her friends by wearing older clothes and not prejudging others based on their looks.
