On the first night she began living there, she began to have the same horrible and vivid nightmare of her brother’s death. She would wake up in the middle of night in a cold sweat screaming. In the movie Simon Birch, we learn many aspects from the main character relating to our SPIES unit. The Main character Simon Birch was born the smallest baby of Grapeville in recorded history. When he was born, the doctors believed Simon would only be alive for days or a weeks at maximum, because of a undersized heart. Mr and Mrs. Birch didn’t care for Simon and carried on in their normal daily lives. Believing their son would pass away.
Liesel has realized she must respect the man who was the reason for her and her entire families suffering. She has realized she officially has lost her home, that she is completely isolated from the community. “It was quite a sight seeing an eleven year old girl try not to cry on church steps, saluting fuhrer”(Zusak 115). After losing all of these emotionally wrecking things Liesel learns and understands she needs to keep going forward. She refuses to give up she although times are rough manages to think, it could be worse.
Although humans may originally behave due to innate reasons, much of literature argues external forces shape character and possess the power to influence the way societies behave. Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief exhibits how individuals may react in times of discrimination, and demonstrates the love and hate accompanying war. Difficult times challenge morality, and tests one’s limits; Liesel Meminger perseveres through arduous events, namely due to her identity as a creative and brave adolescent. Liesel’s identity is shaped and ultimately strengthened by outside forces.
Being a ten-year-old girl, the reader assumes that Liesel has not acted unethically or without morals. It is assumed that her mother has taught her right from wrong. An important role model in Liesel’s life is Ilsa Hermann. After seeing Liesel steal a book at the book burning, she gives her the ‘window of opportunity’ (Zusak, pg. 155) inviting her into her library and sharing her own love of books with Liesel. The reader eventually learns that Ilsa is still mourning the loss of her own son many years before. Ilsa takes Liesel into her care after the tragedy of the bombing raids that results in the death of Hans and Rosa leaving Liesel traumatised and
Nazi Germany was full of hatred and German-supremacy. Anyone who had a different opinion was wrong and should be treated as inferior. She attributed this German idea to the suffering of her family and herself. Her parents were called communists and for that reason were persecuted by the government. Liesel confessed to Hans that she hated Hitler, leading to a harsh slap in her face, literally and metaphorically, from Hans.
Lise develops into a mature character because she is able to remain strong in strenuous situations. According to Thomas Bertonneau, Lovisa is “jolted out of her childishness into a consciousness of life.” (239) The themes of violence and consciousness advance Lise’s strength. Lovisa is able to defend herself from the sheep thief when she feels threatened by him; She gives him her ring because it is the only thing of monetary value she has with her.
Ida Arnold is said to be one of the strongest characters in Brighton Rock and can be viewed as a real motherly figure to Rose. Ida acquires the role of a detective after the death of Charles Hale. She is determined to prove that Pinkie is the murderer of Hale. Pinkie notices Ida’s suspicion and marries Rose because he knows a wife cannot be forced to give away evidence on her husband. Ida then feels like it is her job to save Rose’s marriage as well.

“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei. Jing Mei’s mom watches TV shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, which gives her inspiration that her daughter should be like the people and actors. First her mom saw how on the television a three-year-old boy can name all the capitals of the states and foreign countries and would even pronounce it correctly. Her mom would quiz Jing Mei on capitals of certain places, only to discover that
Firstly ,Elena Vilkas. A selfless, hardworking, fearless mother who installed strength and determination to those around her who may not have survived without. Also known for her unselfishness which she exhibited in many situations of the novel. For example,when Elena gave up her bread ration to a starving boy who was already dead but had his hand outstretched as if he was asking for food. The incredible thing about it was that she herself was also very sick and that bit of food could’ve ended up being very critical between life or death.
