The Enlightenment period gave way to many great thinkers, known in this era as philosophes, who fought to improve society through reason and their influential statuses. The main idea of Enlightenment thinkers, such as John Locke, Voltaire, and Mary Wollstonecraft, was to change perspectives on topics of interest, that were previously discredited, in society. John Locke, who wrote the Second Treatise on Civil Government of 1690, founded the ethical idea that all men were entitled to their natural rights. Natural rights, from John Locke’s point of view, could be defined as fundamental principles possessed by each man that is set forth by nature itself. The idea of all men being equal in “what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose [manage] of their possessions and persons, as they think fit, within the bounds of nature…
Johann Gregor Mendel was born in the Silesian village of Heinzendorf, now Hyncice in the Czech Republic. His parents were peasant farmers and very early on recognized their son's intellect. Mendel was able to stay in school and pursue an academic life. His sister, Theresia, actually sacrificed part of her dowry so that Mendel could get an education.
Gregor Mendel actually born as Johann Mendel, was born on July 22, 1822 AD in Austria. Gregor Mendel was born as the middle child and only son of Anton and Rosine Mendel. He had two sisters and the family lived and worked on the farm they had owned for generations. He spent his early life in his families farm until a schoolmaster was impressed with his aptitude for learning, he was then sent to secondary school in Troppau to continue his education. After excelling in his studies he graduated with honors in 1840.

His father who was a doctor wanted Ernest to become a doctor too since during that time children followed in their parents footsteps. Ernest had different plans. Although he was very intelligent and was an avid reader he did not want to become a doctor.
His name was Jonathan Swift he was born on November 30, 1667. Jonathan Swift was an Irish author, clergyman, and satirist he grew up fatherless. Jonathan Swift Jonathan was born with a Meniere Disease that made the hard to hear. He got a degree from Trinity College; he also studied in Kilkenny School, and University of Oxford. Jonathan worked as a statesman’s assistant.
One of the common goals shared by some of the most prominent enlightenment thinkers in Europe is to progress into a better society through the means of drawing back to nature in order to think rationally. By doing so, this would lead one to question authority and previously set standards. Philosophes tend to reflect upon nature to answer their questions. Furthermore, they also encouraged others to do the same in order to free themselves from a corrupted mind and to question authority. When Holbach says that “the remedies for these evils must be sought for in Nature herself,” he is encouraging people to rely solely on nature instead of “cling[ing] to blind opinions imbibed in his infancy” (The System of Nature).
Kant comes to realize the need of finding a foundation for metaphysics when he encounters Hume, who awakened him from his "dogmatic slumber" (Kant, 662b).
Immanuel Kant was an extremely influential philosopher who brought forth interesting ideas and philosophies during the Age of Enlightenment such as ideas regarding political and aesthetic philosophy. The ideas Immanuel Kant had towards politics were radically different from those of the church at the time. Kant supported complete separation between the state and the church by advocating for a republican government. He believed that society should be governed by law to create peace, and by nothing else. With strong support for individual freedom and liberty, Kant was ironically against the ideals of direct democracy.

The Ideas of the Enlightenment Some ideas are so important that they can change people’s beliefs in government and religion, and even change lives later on years from now. The Enlightenment was made up of many ideas which influenced how societies worked and they still apply today. It was a movement in the 1700s when new perspectives and ideas of government and religion were made, changing people’s beliefs and view on society. The most important ideas of the Enlightenment were political rights, freedom of religion, economic freedom, and gender equality.
Immanuel Kant Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher that is known as one of the central figures in modern philosophy (MacKinnon, Fiala,2014, p. 70). He was born in Konigsberg, Prussia in 1724 to an artisan family of modest means (plato.stanford.edu). There attended college, and after college he became tutor and lecturer. From there he started writing and eventually became a teacher. During his life he produced many writings.
There were many events in his childhood that shaped his abilities to be innovative. He was born on December 25, 1652 at Woolsthorpe Manor, which is just south of Grantham in England. Newton was born into an upper middle class family. Despite being a very weak infant and people’s dismissive behavior towards him, he found ways to greatness. He was an only child and didn’t have a father until the age of three, when his mother got remarried.
CANDIDE AND ENLIGHTENMENT In this essay, I will read Candide in the light of Enlightenment philosophy and also with reference to Kant's answer to the question “What is Enlightenment?” Although Candide (1759) and the short essay by Kant “What is Enlightenment?” were written during different decades of eighteenth century but both of them reflect the age of Enlightenment in their works. This essay is divided into two parts: Part I discusses about the age of the Enlightenment and Kant's essay on Enlightenment, Part II discusses Candide in the context of Part I where Voltaire’s views against optimism and his character Candide's journey towards the Enlightenment are discussed.
Immanuel Kant’s moral theory differs greatly from the other theories we have learned about, especially Mill’s view of utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is based on the consequences of actions, while Kantian Ethics focuses on the intentions a person has before they act, and if they are fulfilling their duty as a person when acting. Kant explains his theory by providing examples of different people who are all doing the same action, but for different reasons. He discusses a store owner who charges everyone equal prices and explains that this only has moral worth if he is acting from duty, meaning he does this because it is what is right. The act is not moral if he acts in accordance with duty, or because he is worried about his reputation or business.
The German philosopher Immanuel Kant is considered to be a central figure of contemporary philosophy. Kant argued that fundamental concepts, structure human experience and that reason is the foundation of morality. In Kant’s 1784 essay “What is Enlightenment” he briefly outlined his opinions on what Enlightenment is, the difficulties to enlightenment and how individuals attain enlightenment. Kant defined enlightenment as “Man’s release from his self-incurred tutelage” (Kant 1) and the “Courage to use his own reason.
