The Enlightenment period gave way to many great thinkers, known in this era as philosophes, who fought to improve society through reason and their influential statuses. The main idea of Enlightenment thinkers, such as John Locke, Voltaire, and Mary Wollstonecraft, was to change perspectives on topics of interest, that were previously discredited, in society. John Locke, who wrote the Second Treatise on Civil Government of 1690, founded the ethical idea that all men were entitled to their natural rights. Natural rights, from John Locke’s point of view, could be defined as fundamental principles possessed by each man that is set forth by nature itself. One of the common goals shared by some of the most prominent enlightenment thinkers in Europe is to progress into a better society through the means of drawing back to nature in order to think rationally. By doing so, this would lead one to question authority and previously set standards. Philosophes tend to reflect upon nature to answer their questions. Furthermore, they also encouraged others to do the same in order to free themselves from a corrupted mind and to question authority. When Holbach says that “the remedies for these evils must be sought for in Nature herself,” he is encouraging people to rely solely on nature instead of “cling[ing] to blind opinions imbibed in his infancy” (The System of Nature).
Kant comes to realize the need of finding a foundation for metaphysics when he encounters Hume, who awakened him from his "dogmatic slumber" (Kant, 662b).

The ideas Immanuel Kant had towards politics were radically different from those of the church at the time. Kant supported complete separation between the state and the church by advocating for a republican government. He believed that society should be governed by law to create peace, and by nothing else. With strong support for individual freedom and liberty, Kant was ironically against the ideals of direct democracy.

From there he started writing and eventually became a teacher. During his life he produced many writings.
