Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem Massachusetts, on July 4, 1804. His relatives were all Puritans. They were all very strict, religious, and disciplined. His father was a sea captain who died of yellow fever while at sea. His family did not have very good financial support after the death of his father. He is often known to be connected to the Salem Witch Trials and changed his name so people wouldn’t connect him with that. Nathaniel Hawthorne decided to become a writer after a leg injury which caused him not to be able to move around very much for a couple of months. During that time he read a lot of books and was very intrigued by what he read. It was during this time that he decided that he would one day become a writer.
Nathaniel Hawthorne went to Bowdoin College from 1821 to 1825. He was not the best student and rarely studied. Nathaniel Hawthorne met and fell in love with Sophia Peabody. She was a painter. They were married on July 9, 1842. They moved to Concord, Massachusetts and had their first child. He began to write several stories including The Hollow of the Three Hills and an Old Woman’s Tale. He wrote a story called Young Goodman Brown, which was a great story about witch craft. Some believe that his connection to the Salem Witch trials greatly influenced him during the writing of this story. Because of his insecurity with the Salem Witch Trials, Nathanial moved out of Salem and away from the Puritan lifestyle. Nathaniel also wrote a campaign biography for Franklin Pierce. When Nathanial Hawthorn was made an American Consul to Brittan he took his family to Italy and then Back to England after his vacation. Hawthorne’s greatest work was The Scarlet Letter.
