Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne is most famously known as a novelist or a short story writer. According to the book “Hawthorne: a life”, “ Nathaniel's fame is perfectly prodigious” ( Wineapple 217 ). He utilized his writings to express his dark, gloomy outlook on life. Hawthorne’s attitude was molded by a sense of guilt, which he traced to his ancestor’s actions. He became good friends of two Transcendentalist writers of the period, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. His most popular book, The Scarlet Letter, earned Hawthorne international fame. From Nathaniel's love for reading and writing, he went to college, wrote many short stories, and became very successful in life.

He began working on his first novel, Fanshawe. The novel was published shortly after in 1828, at his own expense, but Hawthorne disapproved of it and tried to get rid of all copies. Shortly after 1850, Hawthorne published his most well known work The Scarlet Letter bringing him fame and financial relief. This book was considered one of the best novels ever published. The Scarlet Letter was about the story of two lovers who clashed with the Puritan moral law. The book was one of the first mass-produced publications in the United States and it was widely spread across the world which made Hawthorne famous. The first printing of 2,500 copies of The Scarlet Letter sold out in 10 days. Later Hawthorne began working on “The House of Seven Gables”, a novel based on the old Pyncheon family in Salem. This novel was set in the 19th century, but also flashbacks to the 17th century, and is about the cursed old mansion and how its dark past still haunts the current inhabitants.
