For example, the writer utilizes words such as "jeopardy" and "darkness" at first, then this switches to words such as "happy" and "perfect" after their crossing. The US is the progressive, prosperous nation it is today for the baseline unity and coming together of peoples from different places, different countries - different cultural and ethnic identities. Acceptance diversity, and humanity are necessary for new beginnings, all of which can be found in the new beginnings that come with immigrant status. An immigrant herself Ántonia Shimerda, from My Ántonia by Willa Cather, knows the hardships that come with new beginnings. The prosperity of a Ántonia, directly correlates to the the United States success.

Antiforeignism was not a new concept in America in the 1880s. It had begun in the 1840s when the first large influx of immigrants emigrated to America, predominantly from Ireland and Germany. The American, or “Know Nothing”, political party was created specifically for the sake of excluding and barring the newcomers from equal opportunities, especially with the case of the Irish in the northeast. Fast forward forty years later and the Irish and the German have become common place amongst the native born Americans and the new wave of immigrants emerges.

First, “One of the things that it stands for is this vexing notion that a great nation can consist entirely of refugees…. either side of the country’s Chester Avenues”. The word “vexing” is a sophisticated type of word choice because not every person uses it in normal sentences unless they are talking very formal to someone else.

Both of them share the main idea that America is a country made up almost entirely of immigrants. Kennedy’s essay, “The immigrant Contribution”, focuses on how immigrants have affected our country, whereas Quindlen’s essay discusses how people of many different cultures coexist and work together. The essays both concentrate on immigration in America and how immigration has shaped and molded our culture. The two authors describe the many different aspects of immigration in immensely different ways.
