Behnken December 7, 2015 The Latino Threat The Latino Threat is a book written by Leo R Chavez and anthropologist who is a professor at University of California, Irvine in which he analyzed the threats that Latinos face in America by its society. In his book Chavez discussed that Americans assumed Latinos were a threat because of the stereotypes and prejudices that the media and many other sources had over them.
1. Many of the neutralized immigrants were Irish and supported the ideals of Jacksonian Democrats. The Jacksonian Democratic Party welcomed and reached out to these new potential voters. It paid off and in 1855, 34 percent of New York City voters were first-generation Irish immigrants. The Jacksonian Democratic Party gained more voters and popularity and therefore influencing the American political system.
In the essay on realclearpolitics.com titled Our Brave New World of Immigration, The author Victor Davis Hanson addresses the issue of illegal immigration. Hanson argues that immigration is without a set pattern and that today compared to migration in the 19th century is different because people can enter the country illegally. Illegal immigration is transgression of Federal Immigration law and costly to the American government also it is leading to an exponential growth in an already densely populated United States. Hanson points out that there is no forethought of whether people enter legally nor if they learn to speak English. The author also mentions that there is an endless number of illegal immigrants that have not assimilated.
Two Sisters, Two Americas is a brilliant article by Brooke Ross that illustrates the life of a family with a mixed-status and what should be done about it. Many people agree that an illegal immigration reform is necessary however people can’t seem to agree on what needs to be done about it. The issue about the immigration reform has created many fights between democrats and Republicans and although both sides think something needs to be done they can’t agree on what to do. Although most people don’t seem to realize is that illegal immigrants are people like us who are trying to find safety and better opportunities. It is clear that illegal immigrants need some pathway to becoming a citizen.
Richard Rodriguez makes several great points in how America plays the victim. America contains millions of illegal immigrants and I believe that America should grant them citizenship. Mexicans, unlike Americans are willing to work for low wages, and fill in jobs that Americans are unwilling to do. Most Americans have a stereotype of most gardeners, being Mexicans unlike the typical American who chooses to stay inside and watch his or hers Smartphone hour hours at a time. Mexicans work out in the heat cutting grass, racking leaves, and tending gardens.
In his opinionated news article, “Ignorant Immigration Reform”, author David J. Bier asserts his opinion on a bill that will reduce the legal immigration by 50% in the United States. Bier supports his position by discussing how the bill won’t reduce immigration, stop the way immigrants are affecting the Americans wages and how they’re following Canada’s footsteps by concentrating on the skilled immigrants. Bier’s purpose is to notify the government of basic facts that they should know before making such claims, in order to bring into light what the real issue is. He writes in a very direct and sincere tone for the government and general public to inform them on false information that the government is claiming that the bill will do. Bier makes it very clear on where he stands on this issue by using credible facts, briefly explaining the opposing side's viewpoint, but he also shows that he’s very bias.
Chavez examines the assumptions made by the media and the public by drawing in sources like magazine articles and illustrations to provide the audience with exactly how these accusations are made and shared with the public. Chavez questions what it means and what it takes to be considered an American citizen and how Latinos, particularly Mexicans, have many things stacked up against. There are no doubts that the number of undocumented immigrants has steadily increased each year. Leo R. Chavez argues that because of the rise in the numbers, it makes it easier for the media to assume that undocumented immigrants, particularly Mexicans, are a threat to our nation through an invasion. Chavez’s idea of a Mexican reconquest is developed through something he calls the Quebec model.

Immigration Under Siege After researching my topic, I found that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is using procedures enacted by congress as a means to treat immigrant workers as criminals while conducting worksite raids. This is a bad idea because they are waging a war against immigrant communities in the process. This agency created by the Government, raids worksites and community schools and sets-up traffic checkpoints to demand legal documentation of citizenship.
Cofer addresses the cultural barriers and challenges that Latinos experience through emotional appeal, anecdotal imagery, parallelism and the use of effective periodic sentences. In her article, Cofer assesses the difficult cultural hurdles of Latin Americans with emotional appeal. She provides insight on her cultural barriers by first conveying the way she had to dress and her struggle, as it shows in this piece of text, “That morning I had organized… which to base my decision” (Cofer 5). This poignancy works to stress an agonizing feeling of uncertainty and restraint towards the author.
There are people who get deported just for minor crimes like a traffic stop etc. The officer would look at an immigrant information and send the immigrant to jail while the police call ICE (immigration and customs enforcement). There are families who are broken apart due to deportation they come to this country to make a living and they are being separated. “Every day they’re about 100 to 300 hundred people who get deported and are left without a home”. People protest about it and been waiting for years to get the immigration reform so illegal people who live in the United States could get there state id and green card.
According to a study released last year by the Pew Hispanic Center, as of 2008, 11.9 million illegal immigrants lived in the United States, more than triple the 3.5 million who lived in the country in 1990 (Izumi). Immigration throughout the years has become a major issue in the U.S because of too many immigrants entering the country year after year. The U.S has come to a point whether they should deport the immigrants back to their country. Believe it or not, these immigrants are a big contribution to the U.S. If it wasn’t for them, the U.S economy wouldn’t be where it stands now.
As (Charles Schumer, Upfront, 2016)has made clear “Without reform our immigration laws threaten to tear apart families” What Senator Schumer is trying to say here is that when immigrants are deported some of their family might be deported but one or two can stay since they have citizenship. In some cases this might be a child that the US keeps in and the family does not see each other again. Of course it would be possible to disagree with the view that deporting would tear families apart and instead argue that not deporting encourages immigrants to break more laws since they already broke one.

There are many reasons why Illegal Immigrants should not be allowed, firstly Illegal Immigrants take jobs from Americans and Legal Immigrants. The next reason is because Illegal Immigrants cause more crimes to be committed.
