Impact Of The Harlem Renaissance

Jazz, Rap, Hip Hop, and many more revolutionary forms of art have roots in one of the most massive cultural rebirths in history. During the 1920s, there was a great movement of people to the northern part of the United States. This influx of people shook up the societal norms and culture there and eventually changed history permanently. The Harlem renaissance had a significant impact on American art, music, literature, and history.

The 1920s were a time of great change in the United States. Years after the Emancipation Proclamation, many African Americans were still treated extremely poorly. Unbeknownst to them, this period would also have a lasting impact on the rest of history as well. “The Harlem Renaissance helped to invigorate black intellectual leadership, strengthen blacks’ group consciousness, and embolden black political activism—all while serving notice to whites that the era of racial accommodation in the USA was over” (Boyd 83). The Harlem Renaissance was a new era for the people of color in northern states. People of color started going back to their roots to create their own modern culture and carve their own space in the world, unapologetically. Black people started developing more music, art, poetry, books, and so much more in order to express themselves and reclaim the culture and identity that they had lost. In regard to the artistic developments of this era, historians will say that the art made “Focuses on the accomplishments of African Americans and their gifts to America in the spheres of art, literature, music folklore, and other fields. In essence, the chapter traces the genealogy of African American folk songs and their meaning and significance in Black America” (Bernard 123).
