The first world war is an enigma, and a debatable topic when speaking on the cause. Many believe that the war was due to the ideology of militarism-and it may be a contributing factor, but may not be the leading one, in my opinion. Some think even imperialism was the main root of the war, which is undoubtedly a motive to enter the war; but most likely not the main factor. Although, I believe that WW1 was a product of the rigid alliance “system” which pulled more and more countries into a war based on a single conflict between nations, and in this case; Serbia and Austria. The beginning of the conflict began by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand; the heir to the Austrian throne in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, …show more content…

The nations of Europe had been creating alliances, in hope to bring peace; but the danger of this was that a dispute between two countries could draw all the other nations allied with them into a fight (Triple Alliance vs. The Allies), and this is just what happened when a conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia led to World War 1. In 1918, the First World War was over; and the 28th U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson, addressed the Paris Peace Conference with “Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points” on January 8th, 1918. Wilson’s 14 points voiced that “We cannot be separated in interest or dividend in purpose.” and “We entered this war because violations of right had occurred which touched us to the quick and made the life of our own people impossible unless they were corrected and the world secure once for all against their recurrence.” He declared that there should be an abolition of economic barriers and international alliances- which influenced the creation of the League of Nations; which was intended to replace secret deals, as means for settling international disputes, with open diplomacy and peaceful mediation, and shows that even a world leader acknowledges how secret alliances impacted the start of the war, which he stated in his first principle; which most likely means even the leader of our country thought that this was a major
