World War 1, gave the introduction to plastic surgery, chemical weapons, and technological advancement. Yet, it was devastating since it flickered the great war from a number of various reasons, mainly consisting of wrong judgment and personal interest. Resulting from WW1 was a number of casualties and catastrophes (such as the Treaty of Versailles) which makes us question, for those who were affected by it, If and how was this Great War possibly preventable in any way? European powers such as Germany, Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Turkey started causing disputes because of competition or undiplomatic actions that were performed by their national leaders based on interest. New imperialism which started in the 19th century, became popular among the European powers since it showed the rivals that the country had strength. An imperialism race even existed with Britain and France against Germany. Colonies were acquired in Asia and Africa. However, tension rose while trying to fight for land in Africa since it included many useful resources like diamond and gold. The Boer War, the conference of Berlin, and the second Boer War were all for imperialism causing tension to rise since wars and events happened. Before WW1, Britain was the strongest European power in modern imperialism since it occupied one-quarter of the globe. Colonial possessions claimed by Britain in the late 1800s contained Canada, India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Burma, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, several Pacific and Caribbean Islands, South Africa, Rhodesia, Egypt and other parts of Africa. Since Britain was a European power with a strong navy and military it was effortless to gain some of these possessions, while others required patience and bloodshed. British imperialism focused on power and expanding trade to improve the economy. The second significant imperial power was France, which included colonies of Indochina, few Pacific islands, as well as several colonies in west and north-west Africa. The German empire possessed of Shandong, New Guinea, Samoa and other Pacific islands, and several colonies in central and south-west Africa. The Spanish empire included the Philippines, and gross parts of South America. While the Russian empire included some Nordic countries. However, Britain remained to be the strongest imperial power which caused aggressiveness towards Germany with the Kaiser Wilhelm II.
