Before and during 1880 there was a growth of Imperialism, which is when the empire expands their countries power and influence over other colonies. The more colonies conquered the more power that they gained, it was a competition between empires. It all started with Social Darwinism, which is the idea of natural selection but adapted to humans and that it is one's duty to protect and tech these weak colonies. This brought new economy markets, and raw materials into one's empire. During 1880 to 1914 European powers wanted to expand their empires into the African colonies. This is evident from Benjamin Disraeli when he states that the country should not be using the colonies as a financial investment but as a political transaction (D2). This is evident in the speech he gave to the House of the Commons on February 1876, where he states that it should be a political transaction in which it is almost guaranteed to strengthen the empire. The purpose of the speech was to convince the House of Commons that it is in the empire's best interest to take the Suez Canal as a political transaction to strengthen the country, therefore he is interested in the counties well being more than anything else. Another figure was Louis Bernard, who stated that France should fight back in order to regain what was once theirs and forget about their humiliation (D7). This is evident in the memoir in 1936 where he asserts the outcome of France fighting back to regain what was once theirs in which it made him forget humiliated France and made him see a victorious and conquering France instead, in which he did not submit but fought back. Bernard was a French colonial official during and after the European acquisition of African colonies, Bernard speaks about how great and proud he is of the French empire and that he got the chance to participate in the war to regain what was once
