Through the developmental process of the United States, many policies were adopted and debated. A popular debate in the early 1900’s was one on whether the U.S. should pursue the values of imperialism or isolationism. Overall, the benefits of imperialism are superior to those of isolationism. These benefits are apparent within, as well as outside U.S. borders. Under imperialism, trade has the potential to substantially increase, there will be a surge in the promotion of english civilization, and the United States will achieve its goal of becoming a world power. The use of imperialism in the U.S. is proven to be more successful than that of isolationism. In the late 1800’s the United States was in the process of a massive expansion. Due to the isolationist methods, the industrial companies were never expanded outside U.S. borders. Therefore, the companies could no longer expand, and many workers were out of work. By expanding markets, the U.S increased its economy and provided employment for many citizens. “The future of trade is in the Pacific” was a very impactful quote by President Roosevelt. They valued “White Man’s Burden”, but there are other reasons as to why promoting modern civilization is beneficial to many countries, including the United States. Promoting civilization to underdeveloped countries created peace and order within those countries and their relations. Some have even became allied with the United States. By creating allies, a decrease in the chances of international conflict will be more likely. Along with alliances, the U.S. will have more regions to trade with and receive raw materials.
