Education In Sparta: Did The Strengths Outweigh The Weaknesses? Do you want to be abandoned because you weren 't strong and healthy baby? This would happen if you lived in Sparta. Sparta was never big it was located on peloponnesus peninsula in greece. Sparta government was ruled by two kings and three Ephors, and a Council of Elders this government was called oligarchy meaning it’s ruled by a small group.
Athens used a form of government called a Democracy, ruled by the people. Since the people of Athens may have different opinions, leading to arguments fights and making family go against family in their own homeland. Yet, Sparta was ruled by few people so the Spartans could avoid all the tension. Therefore, oligarchy was the best form of government for the Spartans. Furthermore, Sparta was focused on their military.
Sparta was once one of the most important Greek city-states throughout Greece, famous for their military lifestyle. When you think of a Spartan warrior, you vision a man with huge muscles, red cloaks, long hair, and sharp swords. Spartan warriors were the best and feared fighters in Greece, they spend their whole lives learning new fighting techniques and serving their home, Sparta. At around six or seven years old, young boys would be taken from their homes to be trained as Spartan warriors.
The king was the executive branch of government and was usually a general who had success in war. The poor citizens, the majority, had representation in the government which helped keep them content and prevented rebellion and civil war from occurring. The system Sparta had in place allowed the government to have a system of checks and balances which prevented any one person from having all the power. Sparta was abusive to children, and any society that abuses its citizens shouldn’t last, and Sparta didn’t. Sparta was a Greek city-state whose sole purpose was military strength. While Sparta lasted for 300 years, any strong society would last longer. They also abused their slaves and killed them with no warning. The weaknesses weighed Sparta down, so here are some of those weaknesses.
The Romans had a system of indirect democracy where the people had the power to vote for representatives who would advocate for them on the state level. The Greeks had a government in which the people directly were involved in the governmental and legislative process. In addition, both systems were flawed in their representation of their people in their respective governments through neglecting a large portion of their population. Both societies did well to create term lengths to decrease the likelihood of corruption and abuse of power through creating accountability. However, the Greek democracy was a caliber above its counterpart.
Was ancient Athens truly democratic? Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state. I do not believe that in the 4th to 5th century BCE ancient Athen were democratic for many reasons.

One of the many states of Greece, ancient Athens was indeed not truly democratic as a result of not inclusive, other than male citizens, to gain authority in ancient Athens, ¨Demokratia was ruled by male citizens only, excluding women, free foreigners(Metics) and slaves.¨(Document D), therefore ruling Athens was only accessible to male citizen since since women, free foreigners(Metics), and slaves were not allowed to rule as a result of not being male citizens. One of the many states of Greece, ancient Athens, was indeed not truly democratic as a result of not even using the essentials of democracy that is used today, “Thus, by our standards, it was oligarchy, not democracy.¨(Document D), therefore ancient Athens was not using democracy as their form of government, they were using oligarchy,another form of government in which a small group of people has power and control, as their form of government instead of democracy.
There were many cases of bribery in the government that wasn't taken seriously by the court. In Sparta power was given to citizens through the assembly which consisted of all male citizens in Sparta, but in theory anyone could participate. The government had an elaborate system of checks and balances to make sure that no branch had more power than another. Also contrary to popular belief the Spartans treated there slaves bette than the Athenians. The slaves in Sparta were actually known as helots who were lower class citizens.

The Gerousia was the next level of government comprised of the two kings and an elected group of twenty-eight citizens of noble descent above the age of sixty serving for life. The next level of government was the ekklesia, an early from of democracy afforded to the adult males of Sparta, was the assembly of male citizens of at least thirty years of age. While the assembly was responsible for policy decisions only the Gerousia had the authority to set the agenda for the assembly.
