"Around 1900-1910, as filmmakers started to use editing, they sought to arrange their shots so as to tell a story coherently and clearly"(p.94). How a movie is accepted by an audience is determined by its amid other factors. A movie that is clear and well edited is more acceptable and sells better. Filmmakers are continually developing and implementing new editing techniques to improve the quality of their films.
Main characters ensure audience sympathy and support through having positive qualities such as compassion and probity or loyalty. They are always supposed to triumph over their enemies. For these qualities of main characters to be established and brought out, supporting character requires possessing contradicting traits. The supporting characters, therefore, end up having odd personality traits necessary to function effectively in unfolding the admirable personalities of the main characters.

It is used to suggest simultaneous action, establish continuity or heightens suspense For instance, in D.W. Griffith's A Corner in Wheat (1909), the film cross-cuts between the activities of wealthy businessmen and poor people waiting in line for bread. This creates a sharp dichotomy between the two actions and encourages the viewer to compare the two shots. Cloud Atlas is another example known for its numerous cross-cuts between the film's six different stories, some lasting only a few seconds and others spanning across 300+ years in various locations around the
