Enlightenment Thinkers I would like to start this essay by stating how important the thinkers and philosophers of the Enlightenment were. There was a time during the 18th century when certain people started to question the world and became more curious about everything around them. These men made thoughtful, elaborate, and admirable statements that structured the founding of our country the USA. They helped us start this country plus they helped us keep it running, and their wisdom has inspired us even after their passing. The founding fathers were inspired by the works of these particular scholars and have used those works in important documents such as the constitution. René Descartes (1596–1650) was a French philosopher and scientist who is most well-known for his statement “I think, therefore I am.” Moving on towards the most influential and essential thinkers, Denis Diderot (1713–1784) A French scholar who was the primary editor of the Encyclopédie, an intricate and organized thirty-five-volume collection of human knowledge in the arts and sciences. The Encyclopédie showed people that it was time for change and helped spread the movement throughout Europe. Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) American thinker, diplomat, and inventor went between the American colonies and Europe during the Enlightenment to exchange ideas between them. Franklin had a strong influence on the founding of the United States government, and helped with both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
