Following the American Revolution and the separation from Britain, the main group that seemed to “hold all the power” were men, mostly white, of property. Many other groups during this time did not hold the same amount of power as the men. Women, in particular, suffered in terms of rights during and after the American Revolution. Between how women were to be seen in the eye of the public and their place in politics, women had very little rights.
In the mid-1800s, many Americans had concerns about the issues occurring and the impact they made on the United States. To put an end to these numerous issues, many Americans decided to form groups, organizations, and also individuals. They would come up with a variety of strategies to make a change. One of the many issues was women rights. In the mid-1800s, women had a hard time being a woman back then.
The question is,is freedom all that crucial and also treasured more by those freedom has been withheld like Maya Angelou and Frederick Douglass say. The women's rights movement was very important to women in the 1800’s. Women were fighting to gain momentum in society and gender equality. Women wanted to have the same rights as men did and the same power because they were getting tired of how their lives were being unfairly treated in society. All women wanted was to be allowed to live life in an atmosphere of religious freedom, having a voice in the government, and living free of lifelong enslavement by another person. Since women were treated poorly since the time period of the American Revolution, when the patriots fought to win their freedom from tyranny, women thought it was unfair since they hadn't gained freedom for themselves.
From the very beginning of America’s independence, men considered themselves to be more important and privileged. The Declaration of Independence says itself, “all men are created equal”, and “governments are instituted among men” yet doesn’t mention women
Another freedom important to me is being to enjoy myself without any fear of the government. In America you can do what you want as long as it is legal and can 't be punished by the government without a fair trial if you are accused of a crime.
Women were considered inferior to men; they had to rights and most of all no voice. Typically, as the old saying goes ‘they were to be seen and not hear’. Revolutionary Mothers, by Carol Berkin tells of the general stereotypes of women in America, the roles in which they played during the America revolution, and lastly it tells the story of the women through their own words. Stereotypes of Women In chapter one, Berkin states “God had created her to be a helpmate to man….and formed her for this purpose…to be frugal, and obedient (2005, p.4)”.
While reading about American history the thing that I found most appealing was the limited rights that women had during this era. Although women gave the early settlers longer life expectancy and brought hope to their future, women still were not considered equal to a man. Women were discriminated against and didn’t play an important role in early American history. Generally, women had fewer legal rights and career opportunity than men because they were considered weak and not able to perform certain tasks. Different women came from different ethnic backgrounds and were all created equal in the eyes of men.

In The Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allan Poe, one of the characters demonstrates their mastery in manipulation. The character Montresor demonstrates his skill through reverse psychology. During the time of Carnival, Montresor, a man who follows his family motto, wants revenge on an enemy of his, named Fortunato, for the many injuries he previously caused Montresor and his family. The former tells his servants that he, “should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to ensure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned” (Poe 4).
It has become common to hear reports of schools that have banned the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, a neighborhood association that prohibits the American Flag to be flown, or someone that is offended by our stars and stripes. Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is an opportunity for citizens to stand up for the American way of life. When given the opportunity, Americans should stand up, place their hand over their heart and remind themselves how blessed they are to live in the United States. As Americans, we have many liberties and freedoms that citizens of other countries do not have.
In addition, all women were denied the right to vote. “The cult of true womanhood ideology extended middle-class ideals far beyond the middle class and affected marriage, female education, and employment choices, as well as strategies for obtaining women’s rights…”(WOMEN). American women of the late 1800’s struggled with no rights in the government, considered inferior, and married women had no separate identity from her husband. One reason American women were treated poorly is because of their rights in the American government.
Throughout history discrimination has had a negative impact on people and has cause certain groups of people to suffer. Discrimination can be against people of different race, religion, gender and sexuality and in the late 1800’s women were one of the groups that were discriminated. Women had to fight hard to obtain the rights they now have in the 21st century and many of the women who fought for equal rights didn’t get to experience those rights since laws in their favor weren’t passed until years and years of fighting. In the late 1800’s American women were discriminated because they were not granted the same rights as men in the workforce, women had to be obedient to their husbands in their marriage and society had certain norms that women
True freedom is without obstruction or restraint yet there are ways in which freedom leads to restraint. Many advances and opportunities gave rise during 1865 and 1910 in America along with it came a sense of freedom for the people who migrated or resigned there. People like Jurgis had the freedom to work, earned money, and own a home of their own, but in all reality they were not free but trapped by the very things that they had the freedom to obtain. Industrialization was a big thing in The United States and everyone wanted to be part of it immigrants like Jurgis would leave their home lands and travel to the city where there was said to be an abundance of jobs and opportunities.
Freedom is something that we all want, we are all born with it. Yet there are places where freedom is not a born right, but a privilege. In the United States we have the freedom to do whatever we want as long as it stays within the law. However not all nations have this privilege like China where the government controls the internet and Russia where the news is controlled by the government. When we see and hear the amount of freedom people from other nations get, we speak to the T.Vs and the radios, saying “someone should help them”, “that’s not right”, “I could never live like that”, and yet we take our freedom for granted.
