“Planning is that activity that concerns itself with the proposals for the future, with the evaluation of alternative proposals, and with the methods by which these processes may be achieved. Planning is rational adaptive thought applied to the future and to matters over which the planners or the administrative organizations with which they are associated have some degree of control.” (Simon; Herbert A.; 1950) in general meaning the word planning means looking ahead, making choices, and deciding the future action, where-ever possible, for attaining objectives. The same needs to be channelised so that the future of India could be planned in an effective manner. To facilitate the awareness of planning with a special stress on physical planning, different strategies need to be charted out. Planning increases the efficiency of methodology of work and makes optimal utilization of all obtainable resources. The paper discusses not only the need for the formal education in planning but also educating people at different sector who are fully or partially involved in decision making or executing the work related to physical planning.

Education about the history of the Indus Valley Civilization shows distinct characteristics of planning from remains of the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro being the earliest examples of planned cities. Grid pattern, hierarchy of streets, public and residential zoning, infrastructure in terms of drainage systems were few of the planning techniques followed.
