2.4 IMPORTANCEOF POULTRY
Poultry means “raising the various types of domestic birds which are commercially used for their meat, eggs and feather production’’. The most common and widely raised poultry birds are chicken. About 5k million chickens raised every year as a source of food (both meat and eggs of chicken). The UK and USA consume more meat and eggs of chicken than other countries of the world. On an average the UK alone consumes more than 29 million chicken eggs every day. However, in a word commercial poultry farming is very necessary to meet up the demand of animal nutrition (eggs and meat). The world poultry-meat industry have significance from among all the meat categories, is that it is the fastest growing. Increasing consumer preference for poultry meat can be attributed to growing concerns related to health, hygiene, quality, safety, consistency, convenience and variety, concerns over growing red meat-borne illnesses (e.g., “mad cow” disease), and price-competitiveness vis-à-vis red meat. Poultry keeping has been a decided factor in agricultural development. It has provided the farmer with a source of income practically the year round, and has played an important part in feeding and clothing the family, and even in paying off farm indebtedness. It has furnished many farm women with an income, and thereby benefitted conditions of home life.
