Before beginning to ride a dirt bike there are some key points that need to be addressed. A key essential for riding a dirt bike is proper clothing and protective equipment. When riding a dirt bike it is important to wear the proper safety equipment designed for motocross: a motocross helmet, boots and socks, pants, a jersey, gloves, goggles, a chest protector, knee and elbow pads, and knee braces. Though it seems a bit excessive the proper equipment is necessary to prevent serious injury. Along with proper clothing, it is crucial to pick the right bike. When picking a bike you will have to choose between a two-stroke engine and a four-stroke engine. Two-stroke engine bikes are typically fast lightweight bikes that have an intense kick to the motor. Due to the bike being lighter it is easier to throw around the bike with the faster punch per Cubic Centimeters. However two-stroke bikes are harder to control and makes learning more difficult for a beginner, they also require frequent shifting.
