Bleached Screens Once you learn or realize something new, you start noticing it everywhere in your life. You start noticing that new word you just learned, that new song you discovered, or that new show you like. This happened to me when I discovered an old phenomenon under a new light. That phenomenon was the existence of stereotypes in Hollywood. Stereotyping in Hollywood consists of attributing a particular behavior to a person from a specific race/gender and presenting it as if they go hand in hand. While instances of stereotyping can be traced back all the way to the time before World War I, its existence in the 21st century is the most baffling (Henderson and Richards). Subsequently, humans definitely have a sense of humor. All our superhero movies have the same basic plot. A person is declared an outcast when society discovers their superpower, they save the world with the very thing that makes them different, and everyone loves them in the end. Our entertainment industry is filled with these movies. However, when someone in the real world has these ‘different things,’ the story ends at the rejection by society. Moreover, racial stereotyping has become a common form of entertainment in our society. From Asians portraying a role of a doctor or a person in IT to an African American portraying a criminal are all examples of how stereotyping takes place in media today. These stereotypes are also used for the purposes of comedy, which is highly offensive to someone that belongs to that race. The derogatory dialogues may be humorous, at first, but they are engraving the idea that it is okay to joke about someone’s ethnicity/race. Since the entertainment industry is so widespread and has such a lasting impact, it is necessary to make sure that they don’t promote something so
