In the bible it is clearly said that the main purpose of money is to avoid violence and mostly revenge. Money is used to repair damage one has done. It is the famous law: “an eye for an eye” (Exodus 21:24-25). Now everybody understands it as a rude and ruthless law from elderly human beings who were not able to have a proper court of law. Nowadays, people think that an eye for an eye means if one takes an eye, the community should take the eye of the convict. However in the Bible it is surely not the case. According to the explanations, someone who took an eye from somebody else’s head should give back the value of the eye taken. It can be compared to the remedies and damages in law Court nowadays. For the society now it is the main cause of the reason why Jews are related to money, it is true but not the only reason. What does the Torah say regarding loans and lending? It is said: “When you lend money to My people, to the poor person [who is] with you, you shall not behave toward him as a lender; you shall not impose interest upon him” (Exodus, 22:24). It is clearly shown that lending money is forbidden among the Jewish society but providing loans is compulsory. Moreover rich Jews should take care of the Jewish society and mostly to poor people. This is where Tsedaka is born. Tsedaka is a Jewish law that forces Jews to give 10% of their wages to poor people. Through “My people” it is understood that lending is just forbidden among the Jewish Society but not for outsiders, this is why in the future they were able to charge interest. This lesson is very simple. You should adapt yourself to the hosting country. Jews should not try to change the behavior or tradition of the country where they lived. They should adapt their way of life, learn the language and be a part of the society. Nevertheless it does not mean that they have to forget their traditions but compromise them. Nowadays the biggest companies in the world like McDonald’s apply this theory. The recipe of the food provided in an English McDonald is not the same as the one provided in America. Indeed tastes are different and they had to adapt to the culture of the hosting country. Moreover this is this capability of adaptation that made company famous and successful. (citer
