How can impure copper be purified using electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a way of splitting up of the compound using electrical energy. The electrical energy comes from a power pack supply.Electrolytic cells are made of two half-cells, one is a reduction half-cell, the other is an oxidation half-cell[1].

Copper needs to be purified because when copper is found it is impure. When copper is impure you cannot make any use of it because you need pure copper to make wirings and other useful things. Copper is initially found from an ore[2]. The ore is diluted with sulphuric acid. This drips slowly through the ore dissolving copper to form copper sulphate. A cathode is negatively charged electrode. The anode is made out of impure copper and the cathode is a bar of pure copper. The anode and cathode are immersed in copper (II) sulphate solution. Oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is the gain of elections so when both oxidation and reduction happen at the same time it is called a Redox reaction, which contains the majority of chemical reactions [3]. It is only called a redox reaction if oxidation and reduction happen at the same time. The anode and cathode are related to the redox reaction because as copper ions move from the anode to the cathode the anode loses mass as the cathode gains mass.The anode and cathode losing and gaining mass is oxidation and reduction, as it is happening at the same time it is a redox reaction.
