Anthony’s head basketball coach in 1973, Hurley proved his abilities as an authentic leader by meeting the four components of authentic leadership. One component of authentic leadership revolves around Self-Awareness, which Hurley illustrates by discussing his career options. For instance, when Hurley was in college he thought that he should pursue a career in teaching to complement his passion for coaching, but he soon found out that the bureaucracy of teaching would not bode well with his values. As a result, he pursued a career as a probation officer, which helped Hurley to make a code of conduct to ensure that members of his team(s) would not turn to crime. Further, Hurley admits that living in Jersey City his whole entire life was part of his reasoning for not pursuing college-coaching opportunities, which reveals his vulnerability.
He lets the coaches that work for him do what they know how to do and lets them coach. He is involved,

Any feedback should be confidential so as not to identify any individual coachee. 1.3 Present the case for using coaching or mentoring to benefit individuals and organisation performance. Benefits to the individual Coaching and mentoring when delivered in a structured and engaging manner can bring significant benefits to an individual in both personal and professional development. Both approaches help develop and increased level of confidence and self-awareness, improved inter-personal skills, managing conflict and enhanced leadership skills (Roberts 2000, Beamont 2002). They provide the opportunity for feedback on strengths and areas for development in a safe, judgmental environment and can help accelerate learning.
(2007) states that this is true with many great coaches today, who have admitted that they would not have been as successful if they did not have a good coach to help mentor and develop them. Coaching is not an easy term to define. American College of Sports Medicine maintains the following
To be a coach you need a certain set of skills. For example a coach needs to have good people skills. A coach has to talk to his team and other people from around the area who want to meet him and talk to him. Another Thing a Coach needs to be arrogant to an extent he needs to be very confident in his ability’s to lead his team to a winning season and he needs to be confident in players that they can execute what he has taught them to do so they can get a win every week.
