Love Victor 9/11/15 Summer Reading In Darkness Passage Response “I am a killer and I have been killed, too, over and over…there are no names in the darkness.” (Lake 1). I think the author uses this metaphorically. I think in his Shorty has been let down repeatedly. Also he does not go by his name and throughout the whole book he goes by his nickname. “Marguerite was famous for that kindness. She’d take a pigeon that had broken its wing and she’d make it better, no matter that Manman said pigeons were rats with wings” (Lake 26). Therefore, they will start to continue their dangerous lifestyle. For example, Shorty killed people, but it was only for Marguerite. Although there is a just reason, you should never kill someone. “Even in war people should not leave children wounded in the street” (Lake 191). Although both stories are different, the main character in Black Boy never had a true childhood. Shorty is the type of person who wants to make everything count. He thinks if one is being artistic they should express it in a way it could help their country or other people. If he was to be an artist, he would remind me of a J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar. The reason is because both artists want to have their message expressed through their music (an artistic form), just like Shorty would. “I feel like if I tell my story to you till the point when I came to hospital, then that will be the point when I break through into the light” (Lake 286).
