What would you do if you lost everything in life? Will you keep fighting to survive or just give up? In the novel In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner Rammi holds onto her humanity regardless of the “organization” striping her and her family that identifies them. Life can be difficult when you end up losing everything and everyone you love. Raami and her family have to get out of the city, they got separated all the time and most of the family died.

First of all, in the novel of In the Shadow In the Banyan Raami and her family have to leave their house and live where the soldiers say so.. According to Raami some soldier said that “Only immediate family members together! The rest divide up (Ratner, 148).” They were separated into two groups: Mama, Radana, and Raami who chose to go with them were the first group then there was Grandmother Queen, Big Uncle , Tata, Auntie India and the twins in the second group. Losing the other half of the family would be difficult because not that long ago they were all together at their house doing family activities and having fun.
