The Disney film ‘Mulan' follows the journey of Mulan, a young Chinese girl, who disguises herself as a man in order to fight in the war to keep her father safe. Although this film displays some historical accuracies in terms of the treatment of woman in ancient China, it was produced to entertain younger children and includes a large of inaccuracies about the respect and consideration a women was given in the ancient Chinese time period.

The treatment of women in ancient China was horrible and the traditions women had to participate in were even worse. The women throughout ancient China were put through ceaseless physical and mental pain like labour because they were female. In addition, the women had to obey a man; whether it was her father or husband, for her whole life and very rarely was did they have an occupation outside of domestic jobs like cooking. The film was made to entertain younger children not to inform people with historically accurate facts about ancient China. Therefore, some scenes contain incorrect information so that younger children (the target audience) could watch the film. Evidence of this is in chp.3 after Mulan dishonoured her family by failing the bride test and her father comforts her by saying "my my what beautiful blossoms we have this year but look this one's late but I beat when is blossom it will be the most beautiful of them all". This quote is referring to Mulan and suggests that even though she failed the bride test there is always another way to succeed and "blossom". However, this is historically incorrect and ancient Chinese fathers and daughters did not obtain a healthy and loving relationship, which is portrayed in the film.
