Rehabilitation can and will work for nearly everyone who has not committed serial acts of a specific crime. The problem is, prisons do not even offer these programs in the first
Ruth Karlsson is the director of Released and Restored program. Her topic was about helping the inmates in prison to become humble educated people, so they do not return to prison. Her first main point was making us college students understand the huge problem we have with the Nebraska state prisons. She first explain how many state prisons there were in Nebraska, which was ten. Then Karlsson want us to understand how many people are in prison…
Society most of time tends to be keen on helping each other. One way we help each other is by allowing inmates, no matter the crime, to join rehab. Steve Earle the author of ‘A Death in Texas’ was in drug rehab at one-point, finished rehab, and got clean of drugs. Earle then wrote about Jonathan Wayne Nobles a man on death row for killing two people. While Nobles was on death row he took drug rehab and got clean of his drug addiction.
It is believed that letting a criminal free from incarceration puts society at risk. Before the reform recidivism rates were high, scaring the public with the idea that criminals can reenter society. When comparing individuals who were sentenced to prison to those in diversion programs, those in diversion programs were more likely to stay out of jail while those who went to jail were more likely to have re-arrests. It was reported that 64% of the treatment sample were arrest-free over a two-year follow up period. Those in the diversion program had recidivism rates as low as 36%; this compares to the group who were given jail time with a recidivism rate of 54% (Parsons, Wei, Henrichson, Drucker, & Trone, 2015).
With drug treatment, more probation, and community service, inmates will get the true chance to change for the better without having to face imprisonment. Cullen’s research says “... Sometimes, longer stays can even increase recidivism” (Cullen). Sometimes, serving a long sentence for a small crime makes the inmates worse off instead of better. This is why alternatives to incarceration are so important not only for the inmates, but it helps with overcrowding. Although the alternatives solve mass incarceration, it does not solve the agendas being pushed out that cause a lot of people to be arrested.
Supporting Research: According to a recent study by the National Institute of Justice, overcrowding in county jails is a growing problem throughout the United States, and can have serious consequences for both inmates and the communities in which they are housed. The study found that overcrowding can lead to increased levels of violence, health risks, and reduced access to services and programs. These findings are supported by a local news article from the Joplin Globe, which reported on the growing overcrowding problem in Jasper County, Missouri. Funding
Although crimes have been committed, it’s not too late to change the behavior of inmates. With the help of rehabilitation, it’s less likely for offenders to re-offend when they are released from
On several occasions is it quite possible through rehabilitation to target these predispositions and reduce or eliminate the possibility of committing crime all together. Many of these programs focus on an offender’s risks and needs. For example, if we find an offender who is highly addicted to drugs or alcohol and several of their offenses involve drugs and/or alcohol we can provide them drug and alcohol treatment, counseling, and support. Rehabilitation would allow the offender to overcome their addiction and better themselves. Other rehabilitation programs allow offenders to learn job and social skills, provides education, and overcome barriers (drugs, alcohol, violence, etc.)
The current system that incarcerates people over and over is unsustainable and does not lower the crime rate nor encourage prisoner reformation. When non-violent, first time offenders are incarcerated alongside violent repeat offenders, their chance of recidivating can be drastically altered by their experience in prison. Alternative sentencing for non-violent drug offenders could alleviate this problem, but many current laws hinder many possible solutions. Recently lawmakers have made attempts to lower the recidivism rates in America, for example the Second Chance Act helps aid prisoners returning into society after incarceration. The act allows states to appropriate money to communities to help provide services such as education, drug treatment programs, mental health programs, job corps services, and others to aid in offenders returning to society after incarceration (Conyers, 2013).
During the 1980’s and 90’s, crime rates starting wavering around their highest rates that they have ever been. This raise in crime rates called for action to be put into place in order to compensate. One of the actions put in to place during this time was a change in sentencing law. Previously, judges were given huge discretion when it came to sentencing and incarceration rates had been dropping for a while. This directed the creation of federal sentencing guidelines.
Many of these prisoners are parents. Parents are supposed to protect and provide for their child, and show them the difference between right and wrong. So what happens when a parent fails to do that and ends up in trouble themselves? Discussing the statistics of parental incarceration and effects that it has on a child can help a person to better understand how to prevent the cycle from repeating itself. Imagine being told as a child that your parent has done something wrong, and will have to go away for a long time.
There’s a multitude of things that need to be repaired in our system, and prison is one of them. Prison reform is an important issue because we need to take care of everyone and with the way we treat criminals, we do not see them as equal. We need to assess illegal acts correctly instead of trying to put people in jail for the rest of their lives. We also need to work more on how we try to rehabilitate people. Instead of barring convicts off from the rest of us, we need to teach them how to integrate, so they can live better lives than they did
Recidivism has become a huge issue within the criminal justice system. This refers to an offender who have relapsed by re-offending, and ending up back behind bars. The criminal justice system has been given the responsibility to look beneath the surface of the individual, and try to figure out what is really going on in their personal lives. By digging deeper into the person’s past, present, and future, you are able to help these individuals with the necessary treatment to help them become rehabilitated and lower the recidivism rate. I believe that in order to help rehabilitate these individuals’ and to lower the recidivism rate there needs to be more educational resources, community resources, and funding provided to the offenders to
This approach also prevents overcrowding in prisons because it also deals with rehabilitative
The correctional system consists of many different government agencies that are responsible for protecting the population from dangerous individuals who may bring self harm or bring harm to others. The correctional system is made to keep everyone safe from those who are considered a criminal or convict. Punishment and rehabilitation are two of the methods used for those who have been categorized as criminals. Punishment consists of parole, probation, imprisonment and death whereas rehabilitation consists of redirection for an individual that has been convicted of a crime. Rehabilitation is a method that could be a mental aid for someone who may possess a mental illness depending on the severance of the crime.
