Income Inequality

A review of the literature in inequality suggests that the views of inequality and factors contributing to inequality and effects on socio-economic development have shifted over time. In a study conducted by Cornia & Martorano (2012) significant changes in income inequality have taken place over the last 30 years - “the analyses of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s focused on the structural determinants of inequality such as land concentration, inequality in education and the urban bias of public policy”. Their main findings suggest that whilst inequality rose in the majority of countries [analysed in their research] during the 1980s and 1990s, it is the last decade that has been characterised by a bifurcation of inequality trends.
