These explorers came in search for spices and commodities to buy and trade with other nations. An example, is the VOC. The VOC is a government organization formed by the Dutch. The VOC’s purpose was to make the people in Indonesia miserable and make them give up their land and resources. The Europeans came to Indonesia and affected its economy, religion, and art. In actuality, coming to Indonesia increased the Europeans economy. The Europeans came to Indonesia for one main reason, commodities. With the Portuguese in Indonesia, they converted many people into Christians and Catholics. In fact, “the Portuguese introduced Roman Catholicism to Indonesia” (Religion in Indonesia). After the Portuguese conquered Malacca they went looking further and found the land where the Sultan of Ternate lived. In this area, many of the Portuguese priests decided to stay there. “In 1534 to many following years, Portuguese priests were active into converting the people there into Catholicism” (Christianity in Indonesia). These Portuguese priests were very active into converting people into Christianity that by the end of the 16th century, they successfully turned 20% of the Moluccans into Catholics. The Portuguese left a very lasting impact because today there is approximately around 23 million Catholics in Indonesia.
