Last spring, I remember hearing whispers around school that someone in my home town got arrested for sex trafficking. In a big city like Minneapolis it would seem like a weekly occurrence, but for a small town it was big news. Hours after I heard the rumor I happened to turn on the television and the nightly news was on. I didn’t pay close attention until they said where the arrest happened. The bust happened three blocks away from my house. I didn’t know the person who got caught, but I knew what house. I walked by the house almost daily while taking my dogs on walks. The Urban Institute estimated that “the underground sex economy ranged from $39.9 million in Denver, Colorado, to $290 million in Atlanta, Georgia.” (“Polaris”) Those numbers were as of 2014, we are less than 20 days away from 2018.
