Teen Issues Essay According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, suicide is the third leading cause of death with people between the ages of 15 and 24 (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry). The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry states 117 suicide committed per day (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). This shows teen suicide is an issue is no secret. There are many reasons teens commit suicide, and there are many consequences of suicide. A leading cause of suicide is mental illness. According to NAMI, one in five teens, ranging in age from 13 to 18 years old suffer from a mental illness (NAMI). With mental illness a leading cause of suicide, and so many people suffering from these illnesses, consequently, suicide rates are on the rise. Additionally, Kids Health says ninety-five percent of people who commit suicide suffer from a mental illness(KidsHealth). The first of these three effects is the cost of suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control, a suicide can cost up to $1,164,499, and most insurances do not cover the medical costs of self inflicted injuries or death(CDC). Because insurance often does not cover the cost of a death by suicide, the family members left behind after the suicide are responsible for covering the immense cost. In addition to the grief the survivors are feeling, they have to deal with this extra weight upon their life. Adding those numbers up, the CDC stated, every year, suicide costs $44.6 billion (CDC). This cost almost seems inappropriate when have tools are within reach to try and mend the causes of suicide.
