The quote also incorporates elements of Indigenous literature through the reference to living many winters. Indigenous cultures often have a deep connection with nature and the passing of seasons, and the idea of living through many winters can symbolize a wealth of experience and wisdom. Indigenous terms, such as "Indyuns" (referring to Indigenous people), add a cultural dimension to the quote. Similarly, in

Gene describes the winter session with a metaphor by saying, “The sky is an empty hopeless gray and gives the impression that this is its eternal shade” (Knowles 128). The winter session’s trait of “gray” represents Gene’s qualities of and lifelessness as the winter’s description is constantly mentioned throughout the book. The author uses a bitter winter motif to compare with Gene’s personality, which contrasts with Phineas and the summer session. Unlike Gene, Finny’s personality is reminded with a motif that is full of happiness and joy. During the summer session, Gene describes “the playing field” as “optimistically green and empty” (35).
Harris settled in Vancouver (1940), where he continued to paint and involved himself with arts organizations, which played an important role until his death. The different elements I would use to describe Winter
The autobiographical novel Winterdance, written by Gary Paulsen, is based on the author’s experiences in both training for and running in the Iditarod dog sled race. Held in Alaska, the race conditions are so extreme it is cold enough for your eyeballs to potentially freeze. An important setting in the novel is the Iditarod dog sled race as throughout the novel, it helps me understand a key character - Gary Paulsen. He allows me to explore the idea of how experiences can change your understanding on life and the significance of loyalty. Gary Paulsen beautifully illustrates the extraordinary setting of the Iditarod dog sled in the novel; Winterdance, to portray and help us understand his experiences.

Grant describes how the weather is cold and rainy preceding the Christmas program, dedicated to Jefferson, but despite this, the community travels from around town to view the program. Grant describes how "people were there much earlier" and exhibits their perseverance when, because of "the rain, they could not drive cars; instead, they "walked or came by wagon" and describes how people wore their "going-to-town" clothes, and once they reached the church, they "kicked the mud on the ground and came inside the church" (Gaines,131). Gaines utilizes imagery to highlight the resilience of the community and their ability to overcome obstacles. Despite the cold and rainy weather, people gathered for the Christmas program dedicated to Jefferson, showcasing their determination and unity. Additionally, the imagery of people wearing their "going-to-town" clothes emphasizes their shared commitment to this important event.

David Laskin’s The Children’s Blizzard explains the devastating force of an intense blizzard, which caught several people unprepared, and it tells the tragic stories of these people. On January 12, 1888 a massive blizzard struck the center of North America, killing between 250 to 500 people and affecting thousands. There were many factors that made this blizzard exceptionally deadly. Many farmers and children who were outside were unprepared to deal with any cold conditions, “a day when children had raced to school with no coats or gloves and farmers were far from home doing chores they had put off during the long siege of cold” (Laskin 2).
Michigan is a wonderful place for activities all year round. From boating and backpacking in the summer to skiing and ice fishing in the winter, there’s something for everyone in Michigan no matter the temperature. However, climate change is bringing unpredictable changes to the weather that are causing destruction to Michigan’s activity catalog. Warmer winters and rainy summers are ruining skiing outings and beach days across the entire state. People are having trouble finding skiing hills with snow on them recently, and “Michigan’s winter has been a whiplash of cold and warm temperatures, challenging snow-dependent ski businesses” (Moore, 2023).

We do not stop to think about how we use our cognitive abilities to help us throughout our childhood, schooling, and adulthood. Two of our cognitive skills are critical thinking and metacognition. Metacognition is thinking about your own thinking processes that include memory skills, memory capabilities, and study skills. Psychologists now realize that metacognitive capability begins way earlier than previously thought (Dimmitt & McCormick, 2011). Critical thinking is examining information and coming up with conclusions and reasonable judgments based on evidence.
