Have you ever come face to face with a huge great white shark? I bet you haven’t! In the short story, The Truth about Sharks by Joan Bauer. Beth is falsely accused for stealing a pair of jeans when she was really just trying to find an outfit for her Uncle Al’s birthday party. She starts as a nervous girl trying to prove herself innocent.
Hammerhead sharks are carnivore because they eat meat much as fish species. They will eat fish to regain their energy because they use most of it swimming. They also use energy by using their sense of smell that allows them to detect blood. When a shark reaches a point when they can’t use any more energy, they will go deep into the ocean and stay there. Their preys won’t spot them as easily when they are deep in the ocean.
The book Sharks In The Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn is written with each chapter being a different first person perspective within multiple of the important characters. We hear the story through each of their own eyes. Each major character gets to express their feelings to the reader in a way that no one else in the story would understand. The chapters get traded off between Malia, Nainoa, Kaui, Dean, and the last chapter of the book Augie.
Attention Getter - How many of you have heard of the documentary, Blackfish? This documentary released in 2013 “focuses on Tilikum, an orca whale held by SeaWorld, and the controversy over captive whales”, according to wikipedia.org/blackfish. It goes behind the scenes of the glorified water shows to expose the truth on how these whales are treated. According to www.care2.com, “SeaWorld stated it spends 70$ million on its orca facilities every year, but a tank is still a tank and no amount of money can turn a tank into an ocean.” Reason to Listen - Imagine being put up for display like the orca whales showcased in this recently publicized documentary.
Focus question: To cull or not to cull great white sharks Great white sharks are the biggest predatory fish in the ocean and they can grow to about 15 feet in size, although larger than 20 feet have been seen. Their name comes from the white underbellies of the sharks and their bodies are designed to blend in with the seabed. The great whites have powerful tails which makes them excellent swimmers that can travel up to 24 km/h. They have many rows of triangular shaped teeth and have a great sense of smell and even their body can sense electromagnetic fields produced by animals. They mainly eat sea lions, small toothed whales and sea turtles.
Baleen whales, some of which are the largest animals to have ever lived on earth, eat some of the smallest, most abundant life in the oceans: plankton. Some baleen whales also eat small schooling fishes, and a variety of crustaceans such as krill, copepods, and amphipods. Baleen whales use baleen to strain food from the water.
(Blackfish). Killer whales in the wild are aggressive towards each other just as they are to humans, in 1989 an accident involving two whales: Kandu and Corky resulted in Kandu bleeding to death. (Kirby 2) this would have never happened if the whales had the enough space they needed to separate from each other. Contrastingly, killer whales in the wild are more peaceful toward each other and humans. There is only one accident of an orca biting someone in the wild.
Since the display of captive whales has begun, one hundred and fifty-four people have either been injured or killed by a whale attack (Jacobs). For instance, Dawn Brancheau was killed by the tix ton bull orca whale, Tilikum (”Should Orcas Be Kept in Captivity?”). Tilikum was separated from his mother when he was two years old and had been moved from park to park his entire life. The separation issues from losing his mother and never having a true home had an immense physiological effect on Tilikum that caused him to lash out and kill one of the most experienced trainers at Sea World. Another instance of a deadly killer whale attack happened in Spain.
Humpbacks are baleen whales that use bristles to filter their food out of mouth fuels of seawater. Their diet consists mainly of plankton and krill, as well as small schooling fish. Whales, include the largest animals in all of life on Earth, and are a curtail part of the ecosystem today. They have high metabolic demands and when they were in larger populations, before industrial whaling, whales would have had a strong influence on marine ecosystems, even greater than today. They play several environmental roles including, consumers of several species, prey to large bodied predators, reservoirs of nutrients, and detrital sources of energy and habitat in the deep sea.
Although the orca can be found in both in the open ocean and in the coastal waters, they primarily inhabit the continental shelf’s in the water less than 200 meters deep. In the cold water area is the most distribution limited by the seasonal pack ice. The killer whale is the top carnivore consumer on the food web. Killer whales may be large in size and appetite, but they still act on instinct and have no desire to kill intentionally. The killer whale is also a very playful and intelligent creature like most dolphins are, therefore they do not deserve the name killer whale.
I’ve been to the ocean a couple times and dolphins were always swimming first thing in the morning when I looked off the balcony. They are absolutely beautiful and just simply amazing creatures. I’ve also watched several movies about kids swimming with dolphins and they are so sweet. Sharks kill people but dolphins are less likely. Jump off a pier into the ocean-
Sharks have been swimming the world’s oceans for more than 400 million years - 100 years before the first dinosaurs appeared (Griffin et al., 2008). Sharks fall under the kingdom Animalia, the phylum Chordate and the class chondrichthyes. There are more than 400 known shark species found in the ocean (Musick and Musick, 2011). In the ocean, sharks help maintain the health of ocean ecosystems and help regulate and maintain the balance of the marine environment (Griffin et al., 2008). These sharks have slow growth rates and reach sexual maturity at a relatively late age compared to other marine fish, which leaves their population vulnerable to any outside sources (Musick and Musick, 2011).
Hi! , I’m Wil. Today I’m going to talk about Bass fishing. Bass are a very fun fish to catch, and I will try to cover most of this topic today. The first thing I want to talk about is Bass Habitat and food source.
You take a huge breath in your scuba mask. You dive into the water you, open your eyes. It’s all bright and colorful. You see multiple animals. There is some that are ugly but you see the most beautiful fish.
1. 90-100 million tons are killed and wiped off the planet each year. Consisting of some of the most beautiful creatures on the planet. Fish are a primary food source to 3.5 billion people worldwide and the depletion of the species is leaving millions of people hungry. Over fishing is a huge problem that needs to be stopped.
