However, most people do not know that Mary Shelley’s 1818 book Frankenstein is one of the earliest examples of the proverb “one can not judge a book by its cover.” In the novel, the normal-looking Victor Frankenstein is unfeeling and apathetic, and the Monster is ugly and virtuous. To prove that beauty is on the inside, Shelley parallels Victor and the Monster’s response to adversity and guilt.
Over the past century, Frankenstein has been analyzed and interpreted in seemingly infinite different forms of literature, film, and television shows. When analyzing and appreciating the true literary essence behind Mary Shelley’s original Frankenstein, one of the most important comparisons to consider remains the underlying influences behind the Creature’s immoral actions and whether or not the blame for these actions belong to Victor or the Creature. When exploring the dichotomy of the Creature versus Victor Frankenstein, one of the biggest and most widely debated questions remains whether Victor should be blamed for the Creature’s destructive actions or if the Creature should be considered guilty for his actions based off of his own free will. Many consider Victor Frankenstein the villain of the story due to his repetitive decisions to abandon and avoid his own “mistake,” the irresponsible choice of creating the monster in the first place, and his obvious negligence of the Creature’s feelings.
In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein brings his creation to life and has to endure the repercussions of his actions. While Victor is in fact human, the question of whether the creature or Victor is more human still stands. Humanity is demonstrated as compassionate in the book and monstrosity is the opposite. The creature is more human because of his developed personality and desire to be human. Victor, although born into a humane family, evolved into everything bad about humanity; he developed obsession, resentment, and manipulated life to conform to his idealities.

In Philip Pullman’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ , it clearly shows that he encourages the audience to feel more sympathy for the Monster and not Frankenstein. This is because of the way people describe the Monster and say extremely violent things to him, such as death threats. The Monster states things in the story so the other people understand the hardships he has had but not everyone believes that it is worth feeling sorry for because of the way he is different to man. So it makes the audience have sympathy for him because they know what the Monster has been through and they know he has had gone through more exclusion from the public than what Frankenstein has.

Through this novel, Shelley proves that good and evil in human nature is not always simple to define, and that everyone has both of these qualities within them. The duality of human nature is shown through the characters of Victor Frankenstein and his monster, who are both heroes in the novel while simultaneously displaying anti-hero qualities. Shelley forces the reader to sympathize with them both but also creates gruesome ideas of the two. Frankenstein’s creature places himself in a submissive position when he begs his creator to have mercy on him and asking the creator to “create a female for [him] with whom [he] can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for [his] being.”
The monster’s soul, designed to be human-like, corrupts as his acts of kindness are treated with hate and malice. In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, the monster causes suffering and harm to others due to the injustice and harm inflicted upon the monster’s well intentioned actions.
